The Pino del Oro Mining Zone (ZoMiPO) is located straddling the Duero river, within the Arribes Natural Park, in the western part of Zamora province, and adjacent to the Portuguese border. It involves a group of very peculiar gold mining structures dating from the Roman period (1st-2nd Centuries), which is shared by the municipalities of Pino del Oro and Villardiegua de la Ribera.

The work carried out by the SST-LA research group in the last 4 years has allowed us to understand the prospection, extraction and gold-processing techniques. Also, settlements and agricultural structures have been excavated, shedding light on the social transformations brought about by this mining activity.

Research has been financed by the municipalities involved, the regional government (Junta de Castilla y León) and the Science and Innovation Ministry. Within the CSD-TCP project, there has been an effort to apply the protocols, methodological techniques and valorisation of this heritage, in sync with the scientific principles behind the Consolider programme.
