The
Nice Treaty dealt mainly with the institutional adaptations required for
the expansion of the Union to 25 Member States. These issues remained
unresolved with the Treaty of Amsterdam and they provided the background
for the one of the most difficult negotiations in the history of the Union.
The Treaty was signed on 26 February 2001 and came into force on 2 February
2003.
