PROCEDURE
On
26 March 1998, the government introduced the ratification bill,
approved the Folketing (92 votes for, 22 against). For the 5/6 majority,
150 members out of the total number of 179 would have been required.
On 28 May 1998, Danish people approved the Amsterdam Treaty in a
referendum by 55.1 per cent of the vote and the ratification law
went into effect on 6 June 1998 (Law No. 322). This was the fifth
referendum on European matters in Denmark since 1972.
