1994: EU - Accession (Yes 67 % - No 33 % - Turnout 82 %)

 

CONSTITUTIONAL CONDITIONS - Constitution of Austria

Binding referendum provided if total revision or partial revision effected. Otherwise binding referendum requires implementation by constitutional amendment. Public opinion poll expressly provided.

 

PROCEDURE

The amendment of the constitution was introduced into the Nationalrat on 16 April 1998 and passed on 12 May. The Bundesrat approved it on 4 June. The 2/3 majority was assured by the grand coalition government reaching the required majority in each of the houses.
