Commemoration day: 23 August
On 2nd April 2009 the European Parliament adopted a resolution on European Conscience and Totalitarianism, determining 23 August, the date on which in 1939 the infamous Ribbentrop-Molotow agreement was signed between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. The Resolution called for the proclamation of 23 August as a Europe-wide Day of Remembrance for the victims of all totalitarian and authoritarian regimes.
In this section you will find information on whether EU member states have adopted 23rd August as a commemoration day as well as other national remembrance days.
