Legislation on denial crimes
Publicly condoning, denying or grossly trivializing genocide or crimes against humanity fall in the category of what has been called “denial crimes” or in broad terms “hate speech”. EU member states have enacted specific legislation criminalizing these activities and, while some countries have adopted legislation criminalizing the denial of the crimes of Nazism and Communism, others have done it in broad terms to include genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes. There is also a group of states without legislation at all.
In this section you will find information on whether EU member states have adopted legislation criminalizing the denial of crimes of Nazism, Communism and of international crimes. By clicking on each country, details of the provisions will be displayed below the map.
