The Cultural Heritage covers many aspects and its analysis can be approached from different points of view, one of which is the study of materials that have been used in the Cultural Goods.
These materials can be subsumed under the term of geomaterials, defined as those materials of geological origin that, after a setup process, are used within various industrial sectors, particularly in shaping and preservation of Cultural Heritage.
The proposed course aims the study of the main geomaterials (natural stone, ceramics, mortars, metals, glass, adobe ...) that conform the Cultural Goods through various techniques of characterization.
Analyzed together the forms of alteration that occur on each type of these materials and damage mechanisms operating in them. It also addresses the fundamental techniques used for conservation and / or restoration of the materials used on Heritage, showing practical examples.
The main objective of the course is to provide an overview of the materials used on Cultural Heritage, specially on built heritage as well as the analytical techniques employed for characterization and conservation.
