Summer School
Researching non-industrial agriculture
Based on the previous experience gained from organizing two Summer Schools within the EARTH European project, funded by the ESF, this initiative has the main objective of offering the participants the necessary tools for studying non-industrial agriculture in its social and cultural context. This focus on socio-cultural aspects will allow students to understand the historical processes which are behind the development of agriculture from the beginning, and witness the conservation of a rich cultural and biological heritage in some parts of Europe.
The great diversity of professor and student curricula enables a multi-disciplinary approach to different aspects of agriculture (crops, soil, animals, landscapes, techniques, human groups, etc.) from very different perspectives such as archaeology (archaeobiology, landscape archaeology, functional analysis), anthropology, history, geography, agronomy and plant genetics, which greatly enrich the content of the School's program and the training of participants.
This School is an experimental laboratory in which instruction is articulated in three different modules: traditional classroom teaching, laboratory practice and fieldwork. Analytical themes are related with essential aspects of traditional agriculture: techniques, crop evolution, landscape transformation, stockbreeding and pastoralism, ethnography, etc. Laboratory practice will complement theoretical knowledge, expanding the knowledge of methodologies belonging to different scientific fields (archaeobiology, functional analysis, etc.), always related to non-industrial agriculture. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in different agricultural activities thanks to the active collaboration of local farmers, which endows this School with a unique experience in forming future specialists.
