Ph.D. project: "Censorship and circulation of the Bible in Sixteenth-Century Spain."

Current Research: My Ph.D. dissertation will deal with the wide-ranging discussion on the circulation of the Bible during the Spanish Golden Age. I am going to pursue at least three lines of research:

  • (1) the role of the Inquisitorial censors in the shaping of criteria related to the censorship and expurgation of the Holy Book, focusing on the different positions held by the “calificadores”;
  • (2) the potential “dangerous” or heterodox reading practices of Scriptures recognized by the censors (e.g., crypto-Jewish interpretation);
  • (3) the circulation of some texts (“Libros de Horas”, biblical commentaries, etc.) that, after the prohibition of the vernacular Bibles, serve somehow as “substitutes”.
